We make this seashell jewelry from the purple part of the Quahaug clam shell,( mercinaria mercinaria) found along the Jersey Shore.
This shell has an ancient cultural significance to the Native Americans of our northeastern coast. The white and purple shell known as "Wampum"
has been prized and was used as a medium of native trade for 250 years (1609 to 1860) ,. It was legal tender currency in this country.
We continue this long tradition by making "wampum" jewelry .
