Create your API key (step-by-step)
Before Claude, ChatGPT, or any other tool can work with your Convene data, you need an API key. Think of it like a password that you give to one specific app — it identifies your organization and lets the app read or change your data on your behalf.
Step 1: Open the API Keys page
In the admin panel, look in the left sidebar for Settings → API Keys. Or go directly to /admin/api_keys.
Step 2: Click "New API Key"
Give your key a name that tells you where it will live — for example, "Claude Desktop — my laptop" or "ChatGPT — marketing team." If you ever need to revoke it, that name helps you find the right one.
Step 3: Copy your token (this is the only time you'll see it!)
Click Generate Key. The next page shows your new token — it starts with fm_org_ followed by a long string of letters and numbers. Copy it now. For security, we never display the full token again.
Step 4: Save it somewhere safe
- A password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Passwords) is the best place.
- You can also paste it straight into Claude Desktop or ChatGPT's config — the next doc walks you through that.
- Do not paste it into an email, a Slack channel, or a shared Google Doc. Treat it like a password.
What if I lose it?
No problem. Just come back to /admin/api_keys, click Revoke on the old one, and create a new key. The AI tool you had connected will stop working until you update its config with the new token.
Next step
Connect your key to Claude Desktop or ChatGPT.
